Imagine this scenario: It’s 3a.m. and you get word that an unstable patient with a stab wound to the chest is on the way to your ED. Its been YEARS since your last thoracotomy and that was in residency. The trauma surgeon is 45 minutes. What do you do? Run to Roberts and Hedges and re-familiarize yourself with the procedure? Do you feel comfortable treating such a critically ill patient?
What if there was a way to practice life-saving, invasive procedures in an educational and controlled environment?
This c
ourse is intended to educate and train emergency medicine and critical care professionals in some of the most critical invasive procedures. Although these procedures are life-saving, many physicians perform them infrequently due to their rare and invasive nature. This course will focus on retraining or introducing physicians to a number of critical and invasive procedures. By using a 2:1 participant to human cadaver ratio, emergency providers will have the opportunity to practice difficult procedures in a controlled but realistic setting. Participants in this course will have a forum to build on and maintain their clinical skills.

Mak Moayedi, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Moayedi has been teaching invasive medical procedures in the cadaver lab since 2004. He has authored multiple text book chapters about procedure education and has lectured internationally on the topic. He has served on the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Education committee for many years, creating and implementing the very popular Small Group Sessions during their annual scientific assembly. He is an Associate Editor for the upcoming 8th edition of the Roberts and Hedges EM procedures textbook.
Mike Abraham, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Abraham completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2008 and subsequently graduated from ACEP's Teaching Fellowship. He has lectured nationally and internationally on multiple emergency medicine topics. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves as the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health System.
Laura Bontempo, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Bontempo received her medical degree from Northwestern University in 1994 and subsequently completed an emergency medicine residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She spent 5 years at Harvard University as the Associate Emergency Medicine Program Director and then was recruited to Yale University to become the Emergency Medicine Program Director, a position she held for 7 years. Dr. Bontempo completed a master’s degree in education with a concentration in health professional education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She has received teaching awards in emergency medicine from Harvard, Yale and Northwestern Universities. Dr. Bontempo is published in multiple emergency medicine textbooks and has lectured nationally in the areas of cardiology and otolaryngology.
Doug Sward, MD

Dr. Sward was a practicing Paramedic prior to medical school at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland Emergency Medicine Residency. He currently practices Emergency Medicine at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. He also practices Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. He has particular interest in Wilderness Medicine. Dr. Sward has been teaching cadaver based procedures since 2005.
Ryan Spangler, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Spangler completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland where he also served as chief resident. He is the Director of undergraduate medical education and SOM Multisystem course. He is a distinguished fellow of the ACEP teaching fellowship.
Cheyenne Falat, MD

Dr. Falat completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland where she also served as Chief Resident and completed a Faculty Development Fellowship. She has lectured nationally on a variety of procedural and environmental medicine topics. She serves as the Section Editor for CorePendium's environmental medicine chapters.
Bobbi-Jo Lowie, MD

Dr. Lowie completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at The University of Maryland Medical Center wher she also served as Chief Resident. She completed her Academic Emergency Medicine and Faculty Development Fellowship in 2023. Her interests include medical education and Infectious Disease.

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy
Cancellations will be accepted 30 days prior to the conference date, and tuition will be refunded less a $40 administrative fee unless the registration can be transferred. A request to reschedule your participation for a future course (based on space and availability) will be accepted one time, and only if made 30 days prior to the conference date at no additional cost. No cancellations or rescheduling will be accepted within 29 days of the conference date, but you may transfer your registration to another provider if you are unable to attend (at no additional cost).

Target Audience
The target audience for this event includes physicians, residents, NPs, PAs in the field of emergency medicine.
Course Objectives
The objectives for each procedure include learning the indications, contraindications, equipment, technique, complications, sites, post procedure follow up and pearls needed to perform the procedures competently. Ultimately these emergency medicine procedures will be practiced in a controlled setting on human cadavers. The list of procedures covered in the curriculum is as follows:
